The Office of Community Affairs is pleased to announce the formation of a newly established group, the Campus Programming Council (CPC). The Council will serve in an advisory capacity to the Office of Community Affairs. The office of Community Affairs along with the Office of Student Affairs will provide facilitation and support for the Council. Ms. Melanie Miller, Director of the Women's Resource Center, has agreed to serve as the Council's initial chair with the Council members representing a cross section of campus including faculty, staff and students.
According to Dr. Samory Pruitt, Vice President for Community Affairs, "the purpose of the Campus Programming Council will be to facilitate and support meaningful programming that will increase the multicultural competence of the campus community". The CPC defines Multicultural competence as the "awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from self in meaningful, relevant and productive ways." It is hoped that programming supported through this initiative will cross a broad range of issues related to race, class, culture and gender.
The CPC will seek to accomplish this mission through
- providing a mechanism for support of new and innovative events/programs that enhance the multicultural competence of the campus community and
- fostering intercultural dialogue around campus, local, regional, national, and global issues.
The two major areas of focus of the council will be to review proposals and make recommendations for funding of
- Event/Program Proposals for new and/or innovative programs that enhance the multicultural competence of the campus community; and
- a minimum of two "Campus Conversations" each semester that will foster intercultural dialogue around campus, local, regional, national, and global issues.
Interested faculty/staff and campus groups may submit proposals to the CPC for review and consideration of funding. Submissions may be for either of the two programs. Proposals will be reviewed twice a semester for consideration. For more information about proposal guidelines and applications call Melanie Miller at 348-5040.
